Years to ice maker fill valve failure in unfiltered Boise refrigerators
Peak temperature in south-facing Boise Bench garages in July
The most common Boise refrigerator call is an ice maker that has stopped producing. In most cases the cause is a calcium-blocked fill valve — the solenoid that opens to let water into the ice maker. Boise's 180–240 PPM water deposits calcium at a rate that restricts flow within 3–4 years for unfiltered refrigerators. The ice maker itself is typically fine. The water delivery to it is not.
An inline water filter at the refrigerator supply line costs $20–$40 and extends fill valve life from 3–5 years to 10–15. We install one on every Boise ice maker call. Homeowners who take this step rarely see us for the same repair again.
South-facing Bench garages can exceed 130°F in July. A refrigerator in this position runs its compressor at 30% overload conditions for weeks. This is the most common cause of compressor failure in Boise refrigerators under 10 years old. Shade, rear ventilation, or repositioning significantly extends compressor life.
